E.M. Burlingame: Author & Writer

Get to Know Me

I've lived a life never expected, taken down paths I would never have thought to go.

If we're going to be truly free, independent, to truly belong, we must know the truth of our histories, of our lands and peoples, of ourselves. Stories are the only way to do this. Stories that cut through centuries of deceptions and outright lies and manipulations. Stories and non-fictional tellings of truths about human nature which are not agenda fabrications but hard science, engineering and reality derived and driven truths.

How I Started Writing

So, no shit, there I was...

As a journey out of darkness, in my teens, at the prodding of an English Lit teacher and support of a lovely young lady sat in front of me in the class, back in high school, I began to write poetry as a means to figure out complex thoughts. This evolved into short stories and many years later into books.

When I was in my mid twenties, I moved to Sun Valley, Idaho, to be near Hemingway's place, later moving to Tucson to be near that literary community. But, I rapidly realized Michener had been right, one must live a real life before they can tell a real story. So, I set out in my late twenties to live just such a life.

My Philosophy & Vision

Living Literature

Human nature is human nature across the many thousands of years we have oral and written records of such things and those stories which stick with us across time are those that not only help us make sense of human nature but which do so by making us feel alive.

Narrative is Everything

Civility's a nice idea, but it's a lie, a carefully constructed trap which prevents the beautifully ugly reality of human nature from showing and shining through to both illuminate the good and the bad such we can better know and understand ourselves and others.

Every Phrase Counts

It's impossible when writing a piece to know what will stick, what will connect and resonate with others, the way in which the thoughts and senses were driving you as you wrote them down into words, which makes every phrase a thing must be felt and thought through.

From the Gut

I always speak and write from the gut, cause the gut don't lie, and doesn't let me trust all those who fail to speak bluntly and directly, those many who use too fancy words and phrases, or who're sterile as if we're machines to be programmed and not humans to be connected with.
